The hands · two practitioners

The people who do the work.

Six suites and two people. Everyone who works here spent six months in apprenticeship before taking a client unsupervised, and both have been at Solstice longer than four years. There is no rotating bench and no one you have not heard of.

Maya Castellanos, lead aesthetician at Solstice
01 · Lead aesthetician

Maya Castellanos

Licensed Aesthetician, Arizona Board, 2014. HydraFacial MD master provider. Phytomer advanced treatment certification.

Maya runs the facial programme. She trained at a clinic in Barcelona before bringing a European protocol back to the desert, which mostly means she works slower than the American standard and finishes fewer things in the same hour.

She keeps her book deliberately small: about forty regulars twice a quarter, with room held for new bookings. Fourteen clients a week is the cap and it has not moved in three years. The arithmetic is not flattering to the business and it is the reason her results are consistent.

Ask her what to do at home and she will tell you plainly, including when the answer is nothing. There is no retail shelf here for her to sell from, which is the point.

02 · Licensed massage therapist

Jordan Reyes, LMT

Licensed Massage Therapist, Arizona, 2014. Certified Rolf practitioner. Esalen-trained in deep tissue and Lomi Lomi.

Jordan came up in the Esalen tradition, then spent two years at the Rolf Institute learning to work fascia rather than muscle. The difference shows up in how she plans a session: she will spend the first four minutes watching you stand and walk before she touches anything.

She takes one client an hour, every hour, and writes her notes by hand between them. She books about two months out. She has been asked to bring on a second therapist more than once and has declined every time, which is the same reason for both the wait and the work.

If you have been told you need somebody stronger, book her once. Most people who say that have been having fast massage rather than deep massage, and the two feel nothing alike.

Why the bench stays this small.

i

A spa with twelve rooms has to fill twelve rooms. That pressure lands on hiring first, then on the length of the appointment, and finally on the person deciding whether to spend eleven minutes on your shoulder or move on.

ii

Six suites and two practitioners means the schedule is the constraint rather than the payroll. When we are full, we are full. Nobody gets squeezed into a half-hour that should have been an hour.

iii

It also means you get the same person every time, and they remember. Your file is on paper, in the suite, and it has nine years of notes in it if you have been coming that long.

The apprenticeship

Six months, unpaid by the guest: every treatment is performed on staff, on friends of the house, and finally on volunteers who know exactly what they are volunteering for. Nobody has ever been the first person a Solstice practitioner has worked on for money.

Book with a name.

Tell us who you would like and roughly when. If the wait is long we will say so rather than putting you with whoever is free.
