You will be sore tomorrow.

This is the treatment people book when something specific hurts, and it is the one most likely to be booked wrongly. Deep tissue is not a stronger massage. It is a different job with a different aim and a different day after.

What “deep” actually means

Not more force. Slower, more specific, and aimed at a different layer.

A relaxation massage works the superficial tissue and the nervous system, broadly, over the whole body. Deep tissue work goes after specific bands of fascia and specific trigger points, holding pressure on one spot until it changes, which takes twenty to ninety seconds and cannot be hurried. That is why ninety minutes covers less of you than sixty minutes of the forest hour does.

It is also why the useful instruction is not “harder” but “there.” A therapist who is on the right structure at moderate pressure is doing more than one on the wrong structure at maximum.

The scale, and how to use it

One to ten, out loud, whenever asked. Seven is the working number: distinctly strong, uncomfortable in a way you would describe as productive, and still able to breathe normally. Eight is the ceiling for short holds.

Nine is where people stop breathing and start bracing, and a braced muscle cannot release. Nothing good happens at nine and every therapist here would rather work at six all afternoon than at nine for a minute.

Why you will be sore

Sustained pressure on tissue produces a mild inflammatory response, the same way a hard training session does. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours of dull ache is normal and expected, and it is not damage.

Sharp pain, bruising or anything lasting past three days is not normal. Ring us; it means the pressure was wrong and we want to know.

The ninety minutes.

01
The intake

Ten minutes standing up, before the table. Where it hurts, what you did, what makes it worse, what you have already tried. It comes out of the ninety and it is worth every minute of it.

10 min
02
Warming the area

Fifteen minutes of broader work before anything specific. Cold tissue does not release and going straight to the trigger point is how people end up sore for a week.

15 min
03
The specific work

Forty-five minutes. Sustained holds, cross-fibre work, and stretching between. Arnica and full-spectrum CBD oil, which we use for the local anti-inflammatory effect rather than for anything more ambitious.

45 min
04
Flushing

Ten minutes of longer, lighter strokes through the whole limb or region. Not an afterthought: it is what makes the next two days better.

05
What to do next

Two or three things to do at home, written down, that take under five minutes a day. Not a programme and not a product.

Asked often.

Is deep tissue massage supposed to hurt?

It should be strong and productive rather than sharp. Seven out of ten is the working number: uncomfortable, still breathing normally. At nine people brace, and a braced muscle cannot release.

Why am I sore after a deep tissue massage?

Sustained pressure produces a mild inflammatory response, like a hard training session. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours of dull ache is normal. Sharp pain, bruising, or anything past three days is not, and we want to hear about it.

What is the difference between deep tissue and a regular massage?

Layer and intent, not force. Deep tissue holds pressure on specific structures until they change, which takes up to ninety seconds each, so it covers far less of you and aims at something specific.

How often should I have deep tissue work?

Weekly or fortnightly while you are working through something specific, then monthly to hold it. Continuous weekly deep work with nothing to fix is not doing much.

Should I book deep tissue or the forest hour?

Deep ninety if something hurts and you can name where. Forest hour if you are tired rather than injured. They are different treatments and asking for deep pressure inside a forest hour gets you a rushed version of both.

Say where it hurts.

Ninety minutes, two hundred and forty dollars, and ten of those minutes standing up before the table.
