The rituals · by appointment

An order of operations, worked out once.

Nothing here is a menu of parts you assemble. Each ritual is an order of operations that somebody worked out and then stopped changing, and the order is most of why it works.

Why seven days

Six rooms and six therapists means thirty-six hours of treatment in a day and about a hundred and eighty in a week. That is not a lot, and it is not going to become more, because the alternative is shorter treatments or more rooms and we are not doing either.

So the calendar runs about a week out on weekdays and two to three weeks for a Saturday. If you want a specific therapist for a specific hour, longer. Worth planning around rather than hoping for.

What is not here

No music, anywhere in the building. No scent piped into the air; what you smell in a treatment room is the oil on the table and nothing else. No screens, no menus handed to you in a robe, and no upsell at the end of anything.

Those are four separate decisions and they add up to one: everything a spa normally does to signal calm is a thing that has to be filtered out before you can actually rest. We would rather you heard the water.

Choosing, honestly

First time, and you are not sure: the forest hour. Sixty minutes, one therapist, no decisions to make once you are on the table.

You are actually in pain: the deep ninety, and say where when you book so the right therapist has it.

You have driven a long way: the full afternoon, or the water sequence with a soak after. A ninety-minute round trip for a sixty-minute massage is a strange shape of day.

Asked often.

How far ahead should I book at Stillwater?

About a week for a weekday and two to three weeks for a Saturday. Six rooms is a hard ceiling and we would rather run a waitlist than shorten the treatments.

Do you take walk-ins?

No. By appointment only, including for the mineral soak. The road out here is eighteen miles and the last one is gravel; we would rather nobody drove it on a maybe.

Which treatment should I book first?

The forest hour if you are not sure, the deep ninety if you are actually in pain, and the full afternoon if you are driving up from Seattle. A long drive for a sixty-minute massage is an odd shape of day.

Is there music or scent in the treatment rooms?

Neither, deliberately. What you smell is the oil on the table, and what you hear is the water. Everything a spa normally does to signal calm has to be filtered out before you can actually rest.

Seven days out.

Reserve the room and the therapist together. Tuesday to Sunday, ten to seven, on the Black River.
