Correctly applied, no.

Which is an unsatisfying answer, so here is the useful version: the damage people genuinely do report has four causes, all of them specific and all of them avoidable. If your lashes got worse, one of these four is why.

Plume / Blog / Do extensions ruin your lashes?
Cause one · most common

Stuck lashes

An extension bonded to two or more natural lashes at once. The lashes are on different points of their cycle, so the one ready to shed is held by the one that is not, and it gets pulled out of the follicle instead.

This is what cluster lashes do by design, and what one-to-one application done at speed does by accident. It is the single biggest cause of the thinning people blame on extensions in general.

Cause two

Too much weight

Length or thickness beyond what the natural lash can carry. The lash bends at the base under leverage every time you sleep, and eventually the follicle gives up.

A 0.15 classic weighs about four times a single 0.07, because mass scales with the square of diameter. This is why volume is often the gentler option, not the harsher one.

Cause three

Removal at home

Pulling them off takes natural lashes with them. So does picking, rubbing, and oil-soaking followed by tugging. The regrowth cycle is roughly three months, so one bad night costs a season.

Cause four

Not cleansing

Build-up at the lash line causes inflammation of the follicle, which shortens the growth phase. It also causes the itching people mistake for an adhesive allergy, and then rub, which returns us to cause three.

lashes a day,

What normal shedding looks like

You lose two to five lashes a day whether or not you wear extensions. On a set, each one takes its extension with it, which is why a set thins over three weeks. That is the cycle working, not damage.

What is not normal is losing several at once from the same spot, or finding extensions with two lashes attached. Look at what comes off on your pillow: one extension with one short lash on the end is normal. One extension with two lashes, or a lash with a bulb on the end, is not.

How to tell what you have

Sparse but even, recovering over three months. That is the cycle, plus possibly a period of over-long extensions. It comes back.

Patchy, with gaps in specific places. Usually stuck lashes or a removal gone wrong. Also comes back, over one full cycle, and the gaps refill unevenly which makes it look worse before it looks better.

Red waterline, itching, crusting at the base. Not a lash problem: blepharitis, and it is a hygiene issue that predates the extensions more often than not. Treatable, and worth seeing someone about rather than stopping extensions and assuming it resolves.

What actually helps

A peptide lash serum, applied to the lash line, is genuinely useful and cheap. Prostaglandin analogues (the prescription kind) work better and change iris pigmentation in a small number of people, so that is a doctor’s conversation rather than a studio one.

Taking a break does not repair anything by itself. The cycle runs at the same speed whether or not you are wearing extensions. What a break does is remove the causes above, which you can also do by fixing the causes.

The short version

One extension to one lash, matched in weight to what that lash can carry, cleansed nightly, removed professionally. Do those four and extensions do not damage lashes. Miss any of them and they will, and it will look like the extensions were the problem.

If you are reading this because a set went badly somewhere else: bring the lashes in. We will look at them for free, tell you honestly which of the four it was, and tell you if the answer is to wait three months rather than book anything.

Asked often.

Do lash extensions ruin your natural lashes?

Correctly applied, no. The damage people report has four causes: extensions bonded to more than one lash, too much weight, removal at home, and not cleansing. All four are avoidable.

How many lashes should I lose a day with extensions?

Two to five, the same as without them. Each one takes its extension with it, which is why a set thins over three weeks. Losing several at once from the same spot is not normal.

Does taking a break from lash extensions help them recover?

Not by itself. The lash cycle runs at the same speed either way. What a break does is remove the causes of damage, which you can also do by fixing those causes.

What does a peptide lash serum do?

Applied to the lash line it is genuinely useful and cheap. Prescription prostaglandin serums work better but change iris pigmentation in a small number of people, so that is a doctor’s conversation.

Bring them in.

A set from anywhere, looked at free, same week. If the answer is to wait three months we will say that.
