THREE PIECES Written at the counter, not by an agency

THINGS WE SAY TWICE A DAY.

Every barber in here has the same three conversations on repeat. So we wrote them down. Read one before you sit down and you'll get a better haircut out of us. That's not a sales line. It's just how it works.

— Filed at the counter

Three things
worth writing down.

No newsletter, no schedule. When something gets asked enough times, it goes up here.

— Didn't need a whole piece

Answers that fit
in one breath.

Can I wash it tonight?

Yes. Nothing we put in your hair needs to sit overnight. If you had a straight-razor shave, leave the balm on and skip the alcohol aftershave for a day. The skin has been dragged across twice and doesn't need the burn.

Do you sell product?

There's a shelf of it and nobody at this shop is going to bring it up. Ask and you'll get one honest recommendation for the hair you've got, not a three-step routine. If what you're using at home already works, keep using it.

I'm going gray at the temples

Sit with Marcus. He'll cut into it so it reads as deliberate rather than patchy, usually by taking weight off the top so the sides stop being the first thing you see. We don't dye hair. There's a shop two blocks up that does color properly and we'll write down the name.

It's thinning on top

Go shorter, not longer. Length is what makes thin hair obvious. It separates and shows scalp. Ask for weight taken out and the sides kept tight, and the whole thing reads denser. Anyone telling you to grow it out to cover it is selling you a comb-over in slow motion.

I cut it myself and it went wrong

Bring it in, and don't apologize on the way through the door. Half this shop learned on their own head. There is almost always a cut that fixes it. The only real question is how short you're willing to go, and we'll tell you that straight before we start.

Which guard is a number two?

About a quarter inch. But guard numbers aren't standard across brands, and a two on your clippers at home is not necessarily a two on ours. Show us with your fingers instead. Two men have never once agreed on what "a two" looks like.

Can I bring my own clippers?

No. Ours are stripped, brushed and oiled between every head, and the blades go out to be sharpened on Mondays when the shop is closed. That maintenance is most of what separates a barbershop from a man with a kit in his bathroom.
