BEARD & RAZOR Chair 03 · straight razor · ATL

THE RAZOR IS THE POINT.

A beard trim is twenty dollars and twenty‑five minutes. A hot‑towel shave is forty‑five and thirty‑five. They are not the same service and they are not close.

— The difference

Trim, or shave.

A beard trim is twenty dollars and takes twenty-five minutes. A hot-towel shave is forty-five and takes thirty-five. They are not the same service and they are not close.

The trim is maintenance: cheek line, neckline, length off the ends, out the door. The shave is the reason a barbershop exists and a bathroom mirror doesn't. Three hot towels, a badger brush, hot lather, and a straight razor drawn across your face by somebody who has done it four thousand times.

Most men have never had one. Most men who have get one every month afterward.

— What forty-five dollars buys

Thirty-five minutes,
in order.

  • Chair back, first hot towel over the whole face for two minutes. This is what softens the hair. Everything after it depends on this step not being rushed.
  • Pre-shave oil worked in by hand so the blade has something to ride on instead of dragging on skin.
  • Lather off the badger brush, built warm, laid on in circles to lift the hair off the face.
  • First pass, with the grain. Not against it. This takes the bulk down and it is the pass that does most of the work.
  • Second towel, re-lather, second pass across the grain. Against the grain only on the cheeks, only if your skin has told us it can take it.
  • Cold towel to close the pores, then alum if you want the sting or balm if you don't. Fresh blade every single time, in front of you, out of the sleeve.

For the rest of the day: leave the cologne off your neck, skip the gym, and stay out of the pool. Your face has just had a very sharp piece of steel taken across it twice. Give it eight hours before you put anything on it that burns.

2Passes, never three
3Towels, two hot one cold
1Blade, used once

Before you sit down.

Three things we'd rather hear at the start than find out at the second pass.

01

Say it if you get ingrowns

Pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps) is common and it does not react well to a second pass against the grain. Tell us before the towel goes on. We'll shave with the grain only, or take it close with a clipper and leave the blade in the drawer. You'll lose a little smoothness and you'll skip a week of bumps along the jaw and neck. That's a trade worth making.

02

Come in unshaven

Two or three days of growth is right. It gives the razor something to take and it lets us see which way the hair actually grows on your neck, which is almost never the direction people assume. If you shave the morning of your appointment we're dragging steel across bare skin for thirty-five minutes and charging you forty-five dollars for the privilege.

03

Skin that isn't ready

Active breakouts, cold sores, sunburn, a fresh chemical peel, or isotretinoin in the last six months: we'll do the towels and tidy the edges and leave the blade alone. This isn't caution for its own sake. A straight razor across compromised skin scars, and it scars in the one place you can't cover.

TOWEL ON.

Shaves are the one thing worth booking ahead. Thirty-five minutes is a long time to hope a chair opens up.
