More lashes. Less weight.

The thing everybody gets backwards. A fan of fourteen lashes is lighter than a single classic extension, and understanding why is the difference between choosing a set well and choosing one from a photograph.

Why fourteen weighs less than one

The weight of a lash extension goes with the square of its diameter, roughly, because it is a cylinder. Halve the diameter and you quarter the weight. So a 0.07mm lash is about a fifth the weight of a 0.15mm one, and four of them together still come in under a single classic extension.

At 0.03mm the arithmetic goes further: those lashes are so fine that fourteen of them together sit inside the same weight budget. That is why mega volume exists at all and why it is safe on lashes that would not carry a heavy classic set.

What limits a fan is not weight, it is the base. Fourteen lashes have to be gathered into a point fine enough to bond to one natural lash without spreading down its length, and that is where the skill sits.

Hand-made against pre-made

Every fan in this studio is made at the chair, from a strip, in about four seconds, immediately before it goes on. That is the standard and it is the reason a volume set takes two and a half hours.

Pre-made fans come in a tray, bonded at the base with a small bead of glue or heat. They are much faster, they are not inherently dangerous, and they are heavier at the base and less able to be adjusted to the individual lash. A studio using them can do a volume set in ninety minutes, and some do it well.

How to tell: ask. Anybody who makes their own will say so instantly and probably show you. It is a fair question and not a rude one.

The wrap

A well-made fan wraps around the natural lash rather than sitting on top of it, which is what holds a volume set on for two full weeks. A fan that has been closed too tightly at the base becomes a spike and behaves exactly like a heavy classic lash, which is the most common failure in volume work.

Volume against mega.

Volume · $235

Four lashes a fan

0.07mm, D curl, fans of four. Fluffy and layered, obviously extensions but in the way people want them to be, and comfortable for everyday wear.

Two and a half hours. Fills every two weeks at $95, which is the real commitment rather than the set price.

2 wk fills
Mega · $285

Ten to fourteen

0.03mm, D or DD curl. Dense enough to read as a line rather than as lashes, which is exactly what a camera wants and is a lot on a Wednesday.

Three hours. Book it for something, and book the removal or the step-down after it.

On fine lashes

Counter-intuitively, volume is often the right answer for sparse or fine natural lashes, because a fan spreads across a gap that a single extension cannot fill.

It is a technical recommendation rather than an upsell and Iris will say so at the map.

Often best

Asked often.

Is volume more damaging than classic lashes?

No. A fan of four 0.07mm lashes weighs about what one 0.15mm classic extension weighs, and mega volume at 0.03mm is lighter still. Weight is what damages lashes, and volume is not heavier.

What is the difference between hand-made and pre-made lash fans?

Hand-made fans are built at the chair in about four seconds each, immediately before application. Pre-made fans come bonded in a tray, which is faster, heavier at the base, and less adjustable. Ask which a studio uses; it is a fair question.

How long does mega volume last?

Fills every two weeks, the same as volume. The lashes themselves last as long as the natural lash they sit on, which is the whole growth cycle regardless of the set.

Should I get volume if my lashes are thin?

Often yes. A fan spreads across a gap that a single extension cannot fill, so volume is frequently the technically correct answer for a sparse lash line rather than the more expensive one.

Fans made at the chair.

Two and a half hours for volume, three for mega. Text and Iris will tell you which one your lashes will carry.
