What normal shedding looks like
You lose two to five lashes a day whether or not you wear extensions. On a set, each one takes its extension with it, which is why a set thins over three weeks. That is the cycle working, not damage.
What is not normal is losing several at once from the same spot, or finding extensions with two lashes attached. Look at what comes off on your pillow: one extension with one short lash on the end is normal. One extension with two lashes, or a lash with a bulb on the end, is not.
How to tell what you have
Sparse but even, recovering over three months. That is the cycle, plus possibly a period of over-long extensions. It comes back.
Patchy, with gaps in specific places. Usually stuck lashes or a removal gone wrong. Also comes back, over one full cycle, and the gaps refill unevenly which makes it look worse before it looks better.
Red waterline, itching, crusting at the base. Not a lash problem: blepharitis, and it is a hygiene issue that predates the extensions more often than not. Treatable, and worth seeing someone about rather than stopping extensions and assuming it resolves.
What actually helps
A peptide lash serum, applied to the lash line, is genuinely useful and cheap. Prostaglandin analogues (the prescription kind) work better and change iris pigmentation in a small number of people, so that is a doctor’s conversation rather than a studio one.
Taking a break does not repair anything by itself. The cycle runs at the same speed whether or not you are wearing extensions. What a break does is remove the causes above, which you can also do by fixing the causes.
