The cuts · $45 · 30 min

Blended by hand, not by number.

A fade and a graduated buzz are two different haircuts that look identical for about four days. The difference is entirely in what happens between the guard lengths, and it is the reason one grows out cleanly and one does not.

What the numbers do not tell you

Clipper guards come in fixed lengths. A cut that goes zero, one, two, three up the side has four bands of length with three visible steps between them, and no amount of confidence at the counter changes that.

A fade is what happens when somebody removes those steps by hand: open lever work, clipper-over-comb, and a lot of checking in the mirror from three angles. That is where the extra ten minutes goes, and it is the entire difference in price between this and a classic cut.

You can see which one you got at about day nine. A hand-blended fade grows out soft and keeps its shape for three weeks. A guard-stepped one grows out as three visible lines and looks untidy by the second weekend.

Which height

Low fade starts just above the ear and keeps weight through the sides. It suits most heads, reads conservative, and is what to ask for if you work somewhere that notices haircuts.

Mid fade starts at the temple. The standard modern answer and the one most men mean when they say fade without qualifying it.

Bald or skin fade goes to nothing at the bottom. Sharpest, highest maintenance, and honest about it: at two weeks it is a different haircut, and at three it is not really a fade any more.

The taper

Not a fade. A taper is the neckline and the sideburn only, cleaned and graduated, with the length on the sides left alone. It is what a lot of men actually want when they ask for a fade, and it is included in the classic cut at no extra charge.

How long it holds.

Two weeks

Bald fade

Skin grows back first and fastest. At ten days the bottom is stubble, at two weeks it has become a short back and sides, and it looks deliberate for about eight of those days.

Ask for this if you are coming every two weeks. Ask for a low fade if you are not.

Three weeks

Mid or low fade

The blend has more length to lose before it stops reading as a blend. Three weeks is comfortable and four is survivable.

The most common cut in this shop and the one we would suggest to most men who have not had one before.

Four to six weeks

Classic with a taper

Scissor work through the top and sides with the neckline cleaned. Grows out longer rather than untidier, which is why it holds so much longer.

A neck clean-up in between is five minutes and we do not charge for it.

Asked often.

What is the difference between a fade and a taper?

A fade blends the length on the sides from short to shorter, all the way up. A taper only cleans and graduates the neckline and sideburns, leaving the side length alone. Most men who ask for a fade want a taper.

How often do you need a fade cut?

A bald fade wants two weeks, a mid or low fade three, and a classic cut with a taper four to six. The shorter the bottom, the faster it stops reading as intentional.

How do I ask for a fade?

Say the height, not the number: low, mid or bald. Then say what you want left on top in inches or against your fingers. Guard numbers describe the machine, not the haircut.

Do you charge for a neck clean-up between cuts?

No. Come in, sit down, five minutes, nothing on the ticket. It is the cheapest way to make a three-week cut look like a two-week one.

Forty-five, thirty minutes.

Walk in Tuesday to Saturday. If you want the wait before you leave the house, ring the shop.
