Three systems. One apex.

People choose between these by name and the names describe delivery rather than result. What actually determines whether a set survives three weeks is where the material sits, and that is the same in all three.

Hush / Gel sets
01
Soft gel · BIAB

A viscous builder gel brushed onto the natural nail and cured with a deliberate apex. No tip, no sculpting form, no length beyond your own. The gentlest of the three and the one to start with.

02
Structured gel

Gel polish over a built apex. Thinner than BIAB, slightly less protective, and the right answer for somebody whose nails are already strong and who wants shape rather than reinforcement.

03
Gel-X

A pre-formed soft gel tip covering the whole nail, bonded and cured, then shortened and shaped. The only one of the three that adds real length, and the fastest to remove.

Removal

Fifteen minutes for Gel-X, fifteen to twenty for soft gel and structured. All three soak off. Nothing here is filed away and nothing is pried.

15–20 min
Wear

Two to three weeks for all three, which surprises people. The system is not what decides that; the apex and your hands are.

Why the apex is the whole thing

A nail bends at one place: roughly where the nail bed ends and the free edge begins. Everything that breaks, lifts or cracks does so because of flexion at that point.

An apex is a deliberate thickening of the overlay about a third of the way up from the cuticle, tapering both ways. It puts material exactly where the bending happens, which stops the nail flexing there, which is why a properly built set lasts three weeks and a flat coat of the identical product lasts nine days.

Look at the side profile of a set under a light. If it is a flat film following the shape of the nail, it has no apex and it will lift regardless of which product was in the bottle. This is the single most useful thing to know about gel and it is almost never explained.

Which one you should have

Nails that peel, split or bend: soft gel. It is the most protective of the three and the one that lets a damaged nail grow out under cover instead of catching on everything.

Nails that are already strong and you want shape: structured gel. Cheaper, quicker, thinner, and enough.

You want length: Gel-X. It is the only one that adds any, and it is honestly better at it than sculpting because the tip is a consistent shape rather than something built freehand in ten minutes.

What we do not use

No acrylic and no MMA of any kind. No dip powder, because the shared-jar version of it is a hygiene problem nobody has solved convincingly and the poured version is acrylic by another route. And no e-file on the natural nail, ever, which is on the sanitation page with the reasoning.

Asked often.

What is BIAB or builder gel?

A thick brush-on gel applied over the natural nail with a deliberate apex about a third of the way up. The shape is the product: it puts material where the nail bends so it stops flexing there.

Why does my gel manicure lift after a week?

Almost always a missing apex. A flat coat of gel following the shape of the nail flexes at the stress point and separates, whatever the product was. Look at the side profile of a set under a light and you can see it.

Which gel is best for weak nails?

Soft gel, because it is the most protective and lets a damaged nail grow out under cover instead of catching on things. Structured gel is thinner and assumes the nail underneath is already strong.

Do you do acrylic or dip powder?

Neither. No acrylic and no MMA of any kind, and no dip: the shared-jar version is a hygiene problem and the poured version is acrylic by a different route. Gel-X gets you the same length more cleanly.

How long do gel nails last?

Two to three weeks for all three systems here. The product does not decide that; the apex and what you do with your hands do.

Look at the side profile.

Of your current set, under a light. If it is flat, that is why it lifted, and it is not the product.
